The LTH SOPR Just Screamed a Warning — Here's What It Really Means

CryptoPomp

The numbers hit my screen at 2:13 AM Toronto time. LTH SOPR 7-day moving average: 0.94. 30-day moving average: 0.88. And buried in the raw data, the real gut punch — a period low of 0.73 just two weeks ago. That is a level that makes an old-market economist’s hands twitch. It is the smell of fear crystallized into a number. Algorithms smell fear, but they respect speed. And this data point is moving faster than most narratives can keep up.

Let me be blunt: this is not a call for panic. This is a call for attention. What the CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost flagged earlier this week is a recurrence of a classic bear-market pattern: Long-Term Holders (LTHs) are realizing losses on their spent outputs. The SOPR (Spent Output Profit Ratio) measures whether the coins moving across the ledger were sold at a profit or a loss. When LTH SOPR dips below 1, it means the long-term believers — the ones who held through 2022’s chaos — are now capitulating at a loss. Historically, that’s happened in the final washout phase of a bear market.

I’ve been watching this same chart since my days sprinting to be first on Binance listings back in 2017. I didn’t call the bottom then; I just watched the wallets. And what I see now is a signal that demands nuance. The LTH SOPR low of 0.73 is eerily close to the 0.6–0.7 range seen during the FTX collapse in November 2022. But there’s a critical difference: back then, the 30-day moving average spent months below 0.8. This time, the 30-day MA is at 0.88 — still painful, but less extreme. This tells me the capitulation was sharp but brief. The herd stampeded for the exits in early July when Bitcoin flirted with $56,000, and then the bleeding stopped.

Now, the core question: what does a rebounding SOPR actually mean for price? On the surface, it suggests the worst of the selling is over. LTHs who sold already booked their losses; those who didn’t are now sitting on underwater positions. That dynamic creates a supply crunch — the low-hanging fruit of cheap coins has been partially eaten. But there is a catch. The 30-day MA still sits below 0.9, meaning the average LTH who spent in the past month locked in a loss. This is not a green light for a V-shaped recovery. It is a yellow light — proceed with caution, but the path ahead is clearer.

Here is where I lean into the contrarian angle — the unreported blind spot that most mainstream coverage misses. The popular narrative treats “LTH losses” as unequivocally bearish: price is down, faithful are hurting, the end is nigh. But the mechanics tell a different story. When LTHs sell at a loss, they transfer their coins to short-term speculators who are more likely to panic-sell at the next dip. That weakens the support level. However, when LTHs refuse to sell — and the SOPR data shows they have largely stopped — the supply available for purchase shrinks. The market becomes a tug-of-war between paper hands and diamond hands. We don’t trade coins; we trade time. The next move hinges on whether the current holders have the stomach to wait out the chop.

Let’s add my personal field notes from the trenches of 2020’s DeFi frenzy and 2021’s NFT chaos. I’ve seen SOPR behave this way right before the big turnarounds. In March 2020, during the COVID crash, LTH SOPR briefly dipped below 0.7 before the recovery. In July 2021, after the China mining ban, a similar capitulation preceded the run to $69,000. The pattern is not a guarantee — it’s a probabilistic signal. The market is a living organism of fear and greed, and until the LTH SOPR reclaims the 1.0 threshold on the 7-day MA for consecutive days, we are still in the danger zone.

What about the risk of a double dip? The data does not rule it out. If the market drops again to retest the $56,000 low, the LTH SOPR could fall below 0.8 again. That would be a far more grave signal — it would mean the recent bounce was a dead cat and the real selling wave is just beginning. But the current reading at 0.94 suggests the floor is holding. The emotional weight of this data is best understood through the lens of empathy. I’ve sat in a Toronto roundtable after Luna collapsed, listening to traders describe the hollow feeling of watching their life savings evaporate. That human cost is what the SOPR number represents. Behind every 0.73 is a story of someone who hit their pain threshold.

Chaos is just data waiting for a narrative. The narrative here is that Bitcoin’s long-term holders are showing the classic scars of a bear market, but their behavior — pulling back from selling — suggests the floor is being built, brick by brick. The next watch is simple: monitor the daily LTH SOPR. If it stays above 1 for three consecutive days, the signal flips. If it falls back below 0.85, brace for a retest. Either way, the market is giving us a roadmap, not a destination.

In the end, I’ll leave you with a rhetorical question: how many more times will we see the LTH SOPR dip below 1 before we start treating it as the buy signal it has historically been, not the fear-mongering tweet it is often made out to be? Yield is a drug; exit liquidity is the cure. For now, the cure is patience.
