Consider this: over the past 14 days, BTC perpetual open interest on CME increased 30%. Yet funding rates remained slightly negative. This divergence is a footprint. It shows hedgers adding short positions while speculators hold long. The market is not betting on direction. It is betting on volatility. And volatility is exactly what protocol liquidations are not designed to survive.

Fed futures track the expected federal funds rate. Record open interest means participants are taking large positions to hedge or speculate on the outcome. This typically precedes a high-impact event. The last time OI reached similar levels was before the March 2020 emergency cut. That time, it signaled a regime shift.
But this time is different. The market is not pricing a simple rate cut or hike. It is pricing a path that spans from a 'higher for longer' scenario to an aggressive easing cycle. Over the last week, DAI borrow APY on Aave v3 rose from 8% to 15%. This indicates capital is flowing into stablecoins and then being reused as collateral. The risk is that a sudden macro shift (e.g., a hawkish surprise) could trigger a flight from stablecoins back to fiat. That would break the peg and start a cascade.
